Things to do in Melbourne in winter

Winter doesn’t have to mean head colds and early nights – not in magical Melbourne. And especially not when there’s night markets, mulled wine and chocolate treats to be relished. We rounded up some of the most heartwarming ways to spend your August in our city.

TEAM PLAYER

Invest in your team’s beanie and scarf, and get along to cheer them on at the MCG. There’s something about being rugged up with a hot pie and a roaring crowd that screams true footy fan. Plus, it’ll be extra bragging points to say you’ve been there when you’re back home watching the grand final on the couch with friends.

GLOW ON

Docklands doesn’t hibernate in winter – it glows. Get along to the inaugural Docklands Winter Glow festival and spark your imagination. There’s amazing artwork that lights up the street, progressive dinners at favourite local restaurants, inspiring discussions from iconic Melburnians and wondrous workshops. The best bit? Every Friday night from 6:30pm there’s a free fireworks display. Click here for the festival’s schedule.

TO MARKET

The Queen Victoria Market is a tourist magnet during the days, but locals know the best time to visit is during winter nights. The night markets – on Wednesdays from 5-10pm – are brimming with live music, international food stands, crackling fires and soul-warming sangria, as well as the usual souvenir, clothing and jewellery stalls. If you’re not in town mid-week, you can always check out the weekend markets: the Preston Market or the farmers market at the Collingwood Children’s Farm.

DINE OUT

Tantalise those tastebuds with some of winter’s finest offerings across the city. Beeline for a chocolate jaffle from Bad Frankie Fitzroy, settle in for a traditional Italian pizza and hearty glass of red at A25 in Docklands or savour a honeycomb truffle on the go from Monsieur Truffle.

FESTIVE FEAST

Doughnuts and beer. Excellent, we have your attention. Make tracks to Coburg’s Batman Market from 19-20 August for Donut Fest. Melbourne’s best doughnut makers (including Doughnut Time, St Gerry’s and Dandee Donuts) and independent brewers will be in the same place at the same time, serving up their goods alongside live music, a mini doughnut museum and doughnut-eating competitions.

SHOW UP

Make sure you pack your favourite looks because you’ve got a show – or two – to catch. Dress up and get along to one of the city’s beautiful theatres for a magical night of music. Choose between the Book of Mormon, Aladdin and Mirror’s Edge, to name a few. Click here for a full round-up of what’s on.
